Very cool. I worked inside the 'Rock' from 1975 to 1977. The security center wasnt built then, we just parked our cars and walked up to the Portal A and stood waiting for the bus...LOL
ReplyDeleteI was stationed at Fort Ritchie and worked out at the site 1964 - 1966. Looking at the pictures it sure has changed on the outside. It was good duty with good people. I felt so sad when they closed Fort Ritchie, visited it a few years ago and it was all run down,

ReplyDeleteI was stationed at Site R and worked there as a cryptographer from 1959 to 1961 and still remember some of the great men and women that I worked communications with, including the memory of winding punched paper tape around your hand, in the same way you would wind up clothes line with your arm. I was appalled to learn of the ignominious exit for Fort Ritchie, and hope the Site never suffers the same fate.
ReplyDeleteI might add in the almost two years that I lived and worked in in and around the Site, I never heard the phrase Raven Rock, once!
I was at Ft Ritchie from 96 till closing, and worked Site R as an MP.(95B back then) It was my first duty station, and I have to say it was the best one, strange as it may seem. I too was heart broken knowing Ft Ritchie shut down, and seeing her off was an honor, and serving there was a privilege. Site R was really cool, and I made lifelong friends there. I'd go back in a heart beat.
ReplyDeleteI was assigned to Ft Ritchie/Site R from 1963-1965.I remember the excitement on Nov 22, 1963. Amazingly everything fell into place that day. A long day for everyone.

ReplyDeleteFormer MP 1989 - early 1991 - When they were expanding the Delta entrance so that semi trailers could get in there (they had to use explosives). I was the Control Board Operator (CBO). Post 18 was the radio tower. We often put newbies up there. I told him we were losing the reactor and if he heard an explosion or felt the mountain shake to lock and load and go to MOPP level 4. I called every other post and said don't answer the phone unless it is the direct line from the CBO. What a jerk I was. The dynamite went off at the exact time that was scheduled but the new guy up top didn't know anything about that.

DeleteI was a Military Police Captain in charge of security at Site R from 1976 until 1979. I cannot imagine how they have removed most of the tight restrictions we once had. I knew this installation inside and out and can still remember what was known and what was hidden from all but of a few who were stationed there,
ReplyDeleteFt Ritchie was my first duty station in 1979, I was just a E2 when I drove the buses in and out of the tunnel. I remember assisting with the J4 and J5 World planners meeting there. I got to know some very high ranking people back then. As mentioned, I'm surprised of the lack of security, Back then you were not allowed even mention Site R to anyone. You had to have a secret clearance just to get through the main gate and now there are birds eye photos of it on the world wide web.
ReplyDeleteBirds eye photos taken at a distance, and you still need a S or TS for entry to RRMC. Spent last 10 years of my career going to and from RRMC and participating in endless exercises before retiring.
ReplyDeleteWhy were the length people were stationed there basically just 2-3yrs? That seems like a very short period to serve at a place like The Rock. Thank you for responding.
